Bringing life into a Gloomy Room
A room lacking natural light can a feel drab and soulless. But there are plenty of things you can do to shine your own light on the room.
Click on these images to find out how I resolved the problem in my own home.
A large, dark room, our main reception space had chalky, cream painted walls, presumably in an effort by the previous owners to make it feel soft and airy; yet it was uninviting and depressing. Apart from the dog, no one went in there, preferring to cram into the south facing garden room instead.
On the floor above, the master bedroom had lush carpets and green walls, with large white wardrobes providing ample storage but doing little for the atmosphere. In a busy family, I wanted my room to be a sanctuary, but it was characterless and clinical.
When we renovated , we took the opportunity to bring in some warmth. The family now fights over the front room, while I finally have a space to retreat to. The dog likes to hang out in both.
